What Would Joan Didion Do? This Guardian story, Will California Become America’s First Failed State? was pretty interesting but I’d love to see Ms. Didion revisit the issue today a la Slouching Towards Bethlehem.

A really great story from the Times on Sept. 12 about a Pakistani man living in Brooklyn who wakes up every morning of Ramadan at 3 a.m. to play a drum in the streets and wake Muslims for a meal before they start fasting for the day.
